In December 2024, the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) released its Annual Groundwater Quality Report — based on 15,259 sampling locations across India. The findings were not new, but they were stark: 19.8% of samples exceeded the permissible limit for nitrate, 13.2% exceeded the limit for iron, 9.04% for fluoride, 6.6% for uranium, and 3.55% for arsenic. Contamination was detected in over 440 districts.
