Oil-water separation is one of the most important challenges in industrial wastewater treatment. Free oil, which forms relatively large droplets and can often be seen floating on the water surface, may be removed effectively through gravity separation. However, dispersed oil, smaller oil droplets, emulsified hydrocarbons, and fine suspended solids are much more difficult to separate using gravity alone.
