Suspended solids removal seems like a solved problem. Sand filters, multimedia filters, and gravity clarifiers have been removing TSS from water for over a century. And for many applications, they still do. But there is a category of suspended solids that conventional filtration consistently fails to remove adequately and in these cases, membrane filtration for suspended solids removal is not an upgrade, it is a requirement.
