Produced water is the single largest waste stream generated by the oil and gas industry. For every barrel of oil extracted globally, an average of three to four barrels of water come up with it — water that has been resident in the reservoir for millions of years and has absorbed hydrocarbons, salts, heavy metals, naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), and production chemicals. In mature oilfields, this ratio rises dramatically: it is not uncommon for water-to-oil ratios to reach 10:1 or higher in fields that have been producing for decades.
