Global desalination capacity has grown dramatically, reaching approximately 95 million cubic metres per day by 2024. Membrane desalination, primarily seawater reverse osmosis now accounts for three-quarters of global desalination capacity, with thermal technologies (multi-stage flash and multi-effect distillation) making up most of the remainder.
