Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness of water caused by suspended particles, fine clay, silt, algae, organic material, and colloidal matter that scatter light as it passes through the liquid. It is measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), where higher NTU values indicate cloudier water.
