India's mining sector is the backbone of its industrial economy — coal, iron ore, bauxite, copper, zinc, manganese, and a range of rare minerals are extracted from mines across Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Rajasthan, and Karnataka. The sector contributes significantly to GDP and employs millions. It also generates some of the most environmentally destructive wastewater produced by any Indian industry.
